Chicago has been a factory for emerging rappers, including the Southside’s very own Vic Mensa (which he makes clear on his neck.) In April of this year, Vic Mensa made a deal with legendary rapper Jay Z and signed to his label Roc Nation.
In 2013, Vic released his first mixtape INNANETAPE which brought rise to his underground hip-hop fame. From there, he toured with Artists like J.Cole, Wale and Danny Brown and was soon awarded a prestigious spot on the XXL Freshmen Class Cover alongside Artists like August Alsina, Kevin Gates, and friend Chance The Rapper.
In May of 2014, just a year after releasing INNANETAPE, Vic released his single ‘Down On My Luck’ which was serviced to UK urban radio, and charted in countries like the United Kingdom and Belgium.
A surprise Kanye West endorsement came earlier this year when Mr. West recruited Vic Mensa to be featured on his track ‘Wolves.’ The general public got a chance to see Vic perform with Kanye at the SNL 40th Celebration Special alongside hitmaker Sia.
Two months later, Kayne returned the feature by appearing on the single ‘U Mad.’ Shortly thereafter, a new tattoo on Vic’s neck announced his partnership with Jay Z and Roc Nation.
Vic Mensa’s journey so far has already been star studded, and we anticipate even more growth when his debut album Traffic drops soon. Back in January 2014, Tatiana Sy already knew Vic’s potential, and made sure the fanum.fm community took a listen. It was almost a year and a half later that Jay-Z signed him. Roc Nation should think about adding Tatiana to the A&R staff.
